Deliverance Ministries vs. Calvary Chapel: A Biblical and Historical Contrast
Introduction
It has come to light that some within our own fellowship—wonderful, sincere, God loving people—have been practicing beliefs here at Calvary Chapel that are similar to those found in modern "deliverance ministries". Because these practices differ significantly from Calvary Chapel’s biblical convictions, this article will outline: 1. A brief history of deliverance ministries. 2. Their core beliefs and practices. 3. How Calvary Chapel’s approach to prayer and spiritual warfare differs. 4. Why these differences matter for our fellowship.
Our goal is not to shame or accuse, but to bring clarity, unity, and biblical grounding.
1. A Brief History of Deliverance Ministries
Deliverance ministries, as known today, emerged primarily in the mid 20th century charismatic and neo charismatic movements.
Early Roots –
The modern deliverance movement grew out of the Pentecostal and Charismatic revivals of the 1940s–1960s, especially the “Latter Rain” and early charismatic renewal. The 1960 Charismatic Revival, sparked by Dennis Bennett in Van Nuys, CA, helped normalize charismatic practices - including exorcism - across denominational lines.
Development into a Distinct Movement –
By the 1970s–1990s, deliverance ministries had become a defined sub movement, emphasizing demonization of Christians, generational curses, and object based spiritual contamination. The Christian Research Institute notes that deliverance ministries developed a “distinct mode of fighting the devil” that differs from classical Christian teaching, which historically emphasized the Word, faith, repentance, prayer, and obedience.
Influential Authors -
One of the most influential voices in shaping deliverance theology is Dr. Ed Murphy, author of The Handbook for Spiritual Warfare (1992; revised editions). His work is widely used in deliverance circles. Other influential voices: Derek Prince, Don Basham, Frank and Ida Mae Hammond.
2. Core Beliefs and Practices of Deliverance Ministries
A. Demonization of Christians -
Deliverance ministries commonly teach that born again believers can be demonized and require exorcism like intervention. Ed Murphy writes: “Christians can experience varying degrees of demonization, from mild influence to severe control.”- The Handbook for Spiritual Warfare, Murphy (1992), p. 157 (public excerpt)
B. Object Based Spiritual Contamination -
Many deliverance ministries teach that demons can attach themselves to physical objects, homes, or locations. Murphy describes: “Objects, places, and even animals may become points of demonic attachment.” - Handbook, Murphy (excerpted table of contents and sections on demonization)
C. Ritualized Deliverance Sessions
Typical deliverance practices include: 1. Diagnosing the demon. 2. Naming the demon 3. Expelling the demon. 4. Performing follow up actions to prevent its return. These steps are documented in mainstream descriptions of deliverance ministry.
D. Emphasis on “Power Encounters”
Deliverance ministries often prioritize dramatic confrontations with demons over discipleship, repentance, or doctrinal grounding.
3. Calvary Chapel’s Biblical Approach to Prayer & Spiritual Warfare
Calvary Chapel’s beliefs are rooted in verse by verse exposition, biblical sufficiency, and non sensational spiritual warfare.
A. The Battle Is Spiritual, Not Physical
Pastor Chuck Smith writes: “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh… the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God.” — Chuck Smith, Calvary Chapel Magazine
Calvary Chapel teaches that: 1. The battleground is the mind and heart (2 Cor. 10:3–5). 2. The enemy is the world, the flesh, and the devil. 3. The weapons are truth, righteousness, faith, prayer, and the Word (Eph. 6:10–18).
B. Prayer Is the Primary Weapon
Chuck Smith again: “Prayer is the deciding factor in a spiritual battle.” - Calvary Chapel Magazine
C. No Biblical Basis for Object Based Demonization
Calvary Chapel rejects the idea that: 1. Objects can be demonically charged. 2. Homes or items must be cleansed. 3. Christians need deliverance rituals.
This aligns with Scripture’s teaching that: 1. “An idol has no real existence” (1 Cor. 8:4). 2. Believers are sealed by the Spirit (Eph. 1:13). 3. The enemy is resisted through submission to God, not rituals (James 4:7).
D. Emphasis on the Word, Not Rituals
Calvary Chapel summarizes spiritual warfare as: “A conflict fought with the armor of God… the weapons of our warfare are not carnal.” - Chuck Smith
4. Pastor Chuck Smith on Charismania, Superstition, and Spiritual Warfare
A Contrast Between Deliverance Style Practices and Calvary Chapel’s Biblical Approach
Calvary Chapel’s understanding of spiritual warfare is deeply shaped by Pastor Chuck Smith’s warnings in Charisma vs. Charismania. In this book, Pastor Chuck repeatedly cautions believers against superstition, fear based spiritual practices, and any doctrine not firmly rooted in Scripture. These warnings speak directly to the beliefs and methods commonly found in modern deliverance ministries.
Below are key themes from Pastor Chuck’s book, with page specific citations from the PDF version.
A. Pastor Chuck Warns Against Any Practice That Lacks Biblical Basis
Pastor Chuck defines charismania as: “An endeavor in the flesh to simulate charisma…whatever lacks a sound biblical basis.” (p. 4)
He explains that when Christians adopt practices not found in Scripture, even if they seem spiritual, they are stepping into the flesh rather than the Spirit.
Why this matters: Deliverance ministries often promote rituals, object cleansing, demon diagnosis, and practices that cannot be found in Scripture. Pastor Chuck identifies such extra biblical practices as the very essence of charismania.
B. Calvary Chapel Rejects Fear Driven or Sensational Approaches to the Demonic
Pastor Chuck recounts his early exposure to chaotic, fear filled services and warns that such environments are not the work of the Spirit: “Wild and disorderly outbursts… disrupt the Sunday morning message.” (p. 4).
Later, he explains why emotionalism and sensationalism often lead believers into error: “Emotional experiences… can lead people astray when not grounded in the Word.” (pp. 111–112)
Why this matters: Deliverance ministries frequently cultivate fear of demons, cursed objects, and spiritual contamination. Chuck teaches that the Holy Spirit produces peace, order, and clarity — not fear or frenzy.
C. Calvary Chapel Teaches That Christians Cannot Be Demon Possessed or Demon Controlled
Pastor Chuck emphasizes the sealing, indwelling, and protecting work of the Holy Spirit in the believer: “The Holy Spirit comes into our lives to empower us… to transform us.” (p. 23)
He describes the believer as the temple of the Holy Spirit (pp. 23–50) and explains that the Spirit’s presence is incompatible with demonic possession or control.
Why this matters: Deliverance ministries often teach that Christians can be demonized and require exorcism like deliverance. Pastor Chuck’s teaching - rooted in Scripture - rejects this entirely.
D. Calvary Chapel Warns Against Attributing Spiritual Power to Objects
While Pastor Chuck does not use the phrase “charged objects,” he directly addresses the underlying issue: superstition masquerading as spirituality.
He writes that anything lacking biblical foundation - including superstitious practices - is “the work of the flesh” (p. 4). He also stresses that the Word of God, not objects or rituals, is what becomes “real and powerful” in the believer’s life (pp. 65–74).
Why this matters: Deliverance ministries often teach that demons can attach themselves to objects, homes, or locations. Pastor Chuck’s teaching aligns with Scripture: objects are spiritually neutral; the real battleground is the heart and mind.
E. Calvary Chapel Emphasizes the True Biblical Weapons of Warfare
Pastor Chuck consistently points believers to: The Word of God (pp. 65–74). - Prayer (pp. 121–124). - Faith and obedience (pp. 23–50). - Love as “the more excellent way” (pp. 125–131)
These are the weapons Scripture gives - not rituals, not power encounters, not object cleansing.
Why this matters: Deliverance ministries often rely on dramatic confrontations, naming demons, or ritualistic practices. Calvary Chapel’s approach is rooted in the simplicity and sufficiency of Scripture.
F. Calvary Chapel Warns Against Building Doctrine on Experience
Pastor Chuck explains that emotional experiences, manifestations, and dramatic events can mislead believers if not tested by Scripture: “Whatever lacks a sound biblical basis… is the work of the flesh.” (p. 4)
He devotes an entire section (pp. 111–120) to explaining how emotionalism and experience driven spirituality lead to imbalance and error.
Why this matters: Deliverance ministries often rely heavily on testimonies, manifestations, and subjective experiences to build doctrine. Pastor Chuck insists that doctrine must come from Scripture alone.
G. Calvary Chapel Calls for Balance, Sobriety, and Biblical Discernment
Pastor Chuck writes: “A scripturally balanced position…” (p. 4)
He warns that imbalance - especially in the area of spiritual gifts and spiritual warfare - leads to confusion, error, and harm (pp. 111–120). He concludes the book by calling believers to a life marked by love, humility, and biblical order (pp. 125–131).
Why this matters: Deliverance ministries often represent the very imbalance Pastor Chuck warns against: sensational, fear based, and extra biblical.
5. Conclusion: Calvary Chapel’s Stance Is Clear and Scriptural
Pastor Chuck’s teaching in 'Charisma vs. Charismania' provides a clear, biblical foundation for understanding spiritual warfare. His warnings against superstition, emotionalism, fear based practices, and extra biblical rituals stand in direct contrast to the beliefs and methods of modern deliverance ministries.
Calvary Chapel’s approach is simple, scriptural, and Christ centered: The Word of God is sufficient. - The Holy Spirit indwells and protects believers. - Spiritual warfare is fought with truth, prayer, faith, and obedience. - Objects have no spiritual power. - Fear has no place in the life of a Spirit filled believer.
This is the heritage Pastor Chuck handed down - and the path we continue to walk as an affiliated Calvary Chapel Fellowship.
